Are your classes open to all ages?
Adolescents to adults of all ages are welcome in our classes. We also have a special class for younger children, as well as a daytimed class especially for seniors.
How long is the session and can I join the classes after the session has started?
Sessions are typically 8 weeks. Students are welcome to join at any time, but we recommend that if the session is more than half over, it might be best to start at the beginning of the next session.
Can I just try one class before I register?
You are welcome to try one class on a drop-in basis before choosing to register. If you decide to register for the whole session, your $20 drop-in fee will be discounted from the cost of the session.
How do I know which class I should sign up for?
Please check our class descriptions page to help you determine which class you should take. If you still need guidance, don't hesitate to talk to your Oasis teacher about which class is right for you. We ask that all students who are new to Oriental dance take at least one session of Introductory to learn the unique posture and movement vocabulary of Raqs Sharqi. Similarly, we ask all dancers who are new to the Oasis to start with Beginner to familiarize themselves with our own approach and terminology.
How do I register and pay for classes?
You can call or email to reserve your spot in the classes; registration will take place at the first class. We accept cash or cheques at the studio, or credit cards online through PayPal (5% fee applies to PayPal payments).
Is there a discount if I take more than one class per week?
Yes! Students who take more than one class per week receive a 10% discount.
What do I wear to class?
Whatever is comfortable and allows you freedom of movement. Some people prefer regular exercise wear (yoga pants, etc), while others like to dress up in a skirt and crop top. While note absolutely required, we do recommend everyone wear a hip scarf (available for sale at the studio) to help you focus your attention on your hips.
What shoes do I need?
We recommend wearing some sort of dance slipper, like a ballet or gymnastic slipper. Some people prefer to dance barefoot. Those who need more support for their feet may prefer to use jazz sneakers. We do not allow street shoes on the dance floor.
How long will it take me to learn?
Everyone is a little different and students shouldn't be in a rush to move through the levels. After a session of beginner, you will have some basic movements that you can use in your social dancing. After a year or so, you may be comfortable enough to do a little improvising on your own, or perhaps participate in a class dance. After a couple of years, you may be comfortable enough to present your own solo performance.
Do you teach private or semi-private lessons?
Private and semi-privates are available with Oasis teachers for $75/hour. Privates and semi-privates with master instructors Denise or Ahmed Enan are $100/hour.
I missed a class, can I have a make-up?
You are welcome to make up a class that you missed on a different night of the same week. We cannot allow people to carry over missed classes between sessions. If you know that you will be absent for several weeks during the session, perhaps drop-in classes would be a better option for you.
Is the studio available for rent?
Yes, studio rental is possible during the time between regularly scheduled classes for $25/hour. Please contact Ahmed for more information.
